European carmakers are in a race for fresh inroads into the country of 80 million people, which is being promoted as the region’s biggest automotive market.
In November, officials said an Iranian car manufacturer was in talks with Italian automaker Fiat SpA to produce cars in Iran, which is billed as the Middle East’s biggest auto market.
Also, in August Iran Khodro, the country’s largest automaker, said the Iranian giant and Daimler subsidiary Mercedes-Benz would sign a deal ‘soon’ to produce luxury cars and commercial vehicles.
The automaker is one of Iran Khodro’s oldest trade partners, producing luxury cars, vans and buses.
Another German company, Volkswagen, has also been in talks with Iran Khodro for the production of cars and investment in Iran, as well as the transfer of technology.
Many Iranians are wary that some European countries might be coveting the country’s market merely as an export outlet rather than making investment.
Auto industry is the second largest source of foreign currency and foreign technology for Iran after oil.
“Currently, in the absence of such an investment, we have to make optimum use of the resources,” said Mansour Moazzemi, the head of the Energy Committee of Tehran Chamber of Commerce, Industries, Mines and Agriculture.
He said that in the past, a strategic blunder was made in implementing the Subsidy Reform Plan, adding that the government was supposed to secure the fund for executing the plan through the hike in energy prices, Shana reported.
“Global energy prices are, at present, witnessing a downward trend; whereas, prices in Iran have remained almost stable. In addition, the number of subsidy recipients is increasing every year.”
He also said that the country will face serious problems in its energy sector in the future in case the government and state organizations fail to make prompt and prudent decisions.
Moazzemi said the government was supposed to allocate a portion of its earnings from the Targeted Subsidy Plan to domestic production sector, but the fund was not made available to the production, industries and agriculture sectors.
“Currently, the industrial sector is using only a small portion of its capacity and has sunk into recession. To boost industrial output, the government is required to stimulate the market demand.”
The official who is also advisor to the minister of petroleum regretted that energy consumption in Iran is three times higher than the global average.
He told reporters that Iranian national grid has been connected to neighboring countries with common borders with Iran.
Falahatian said that energy exchange capacity between Iran and its neighbors is around 3,080 megawatts annually and Iran ranks first for exchanging electricity with its neighboring states.
The Dy Energy Minister reminded that primary studies to establish undersea cable between Iran and littoral states of the Persian Gulf have been done and the second phase of the studies will get underway.
He said that expenses for implementing the project will be by participation of Iran and other littoral states of the Persian Gulf.
Falahatian stressed that construction of undersea cable has high expense more than land or aerial grid.
He added that neighboring states owe Iran 1.400 billion dollars arears for exported electricity.
The MoU was signed between Deputy Chairman of Iran’s Chamber of Commerce, Industries, Mines and Agriculture (ICCIMA) in charge of international Affairs Mohammad Reza Bakhtiari and Danish director general for Denmark’s industry confederation on the sidelines of the conference themed ‘Expansion of economic cooperation between Iran and Denmark’.
The Mou aims to broaden economic cooperation, exchange of goods, dispatch of commercial delegations and setting up of trade fairs between the two countries, he said.
Gathering on expansion of economic cooperation between Iran and Denmark kicked off in Tehran on Tuesday with participation of representatives from 60 Danish companies, headed by the country’s foreign minister.
Trade between the two countries rose from dlrs 70 million in 2000 to over dlrs 225 million in the year 2011.
Talking to reporters after a meeting with Afghan Trade and Industries Minister Humayun Rasa, he added that negotiations over prices of the products are still underway.
Zangeneh also said that the main needs of the neighboring state, with gasoil as the most significant, were discussed during the meeting.
He put the current export of gasoil to Afghanistan at nearly 200,000 tons per year, noting that the country has announced that it will increase the gasoil import from Iran to one million tons a year.
The two countries will continue the talks over oil products’ prices and Iran is scheduled to present its proposal, Zangeneh said.
The Iranian minister also said that the other issue discussed during the meeting with Rasa was exporting LPG to Afghanistan. They want to buy 200,000 tons of LPG from Iran.

Speaking at a conference on resistive economy here he said, “A country which was run by 100-dollar oil price per barrel is now managed by 30-dollar oil and since there has been no meaningful difference in the country’s management style, it can be concluded that by the reduction of oil dependency, the trend can continue.”
“The lesson to be learned for the country’s economy is that if in future the price of oil soars again to 100 dollars per barrel, we can transfer 70 percent of the revenues to the National Development Fund,” he said.
He also expressed disappointment over high consumption of gas during winter in Iran saying it is harming the national economy.
Speaking on the sidelines of a New Year reception hosted by the Petroleum Association of Japan in Tokyo, Kobayashi said economics will be key for any increase in the refiner’s Iranian crude oil imports and imports from the US, but added that ‘it is possible’ it will increase crude imports from Iran in 2016 after the lifting of sanctions.
Kobayashi said the Iranians had asked Cosmo Oil to increase volumes on a term basis but added that any additional imports from the country would be on a spot basis.
Kobayashi said that Cosmo Oil is likely to renew sometime soon its annual term contract with Iran for the April 2016-March 2017 period at the same volume as the previous year.
He declined to comment on Cosmo Oil’s current and prospective Iranian crude import volumes.
Tightened sanctions in effect since mid-2012 have capped Iran’s crude exports at about 1 million bpd of crude because of volume restrictions imposed on Tehran’s customers by the United States.
Iran will be able to increase exports by 500,000 bpd immediately upon the lifting of sanctions and by a further 500,000 bpd over the following six months to take export volumes back towards pre-2012 levels of 2.2-2.3 million bpd.
He also said, ‘We will be more subtle in our approach and may gradually increase output. We don’t want to start a sort of a price war.
‘I have to say that there is no room to push prices down any further, given the level they are.’
Overproduction, chiefly by Saudi Arabia and non-OPEC producers, has currently led to an excess of up to 2.5 million bpd in the market which has caused crude prices to lose around 60 percent of their value since mid-2014.
OPEC introduced output ceiling of 30 million bpd in its December 2011 meeting as it scrapped allocating fixed production quotas to member countries. The group, however, has been producing nearly a million more barrels than its ceiling for the past 16 months.
